- The homelands of the first Chinese settlers to come to New Zealand lie.
- 5000 Chinese miners come to the Goldfields of Central Otago in the 1860's.
- A good numbers of Chinese miners went to the Californian and Australian fields, and some also came to New Zealand.
- In 1866 there were less than 200 Chinese miners in Otago by April 1868 the Chinese population had increased to 1270
