Stem

Hello everybody for the past 3 weeks we have been doing STEAM/STEM we are working to fix issues that may happen in 2050. my group is making a shirt with heating and cooling pads in it so we could cool down or heat up depending on the weather. Our inquiry question is How can we help heating and cooling without using heaps of energy. So we decided to make the shirt with it.

Book Review

Hello everyone today in class we got to finish our reading book and now we have to write a book review here are some questions  my teacher was me to answer.

The title of the book is called I am Malala. The authors are Malala Yousafzai with Patricia Mccormick. I didn't select the novel my teacher assigned it to me we had no choice is picking the novel. I thought the book was very interesting a lot happened in her life. my favorite part would have to be the part where she is in the van and got shot then she talked about her survival.

these are some of the character, Malala Yousafzai, Atal Yousafzai, Khushal Yousafzai, those are some of the kids of Tor Pekai Yousafzai the mother and Ziauddin Yousafzai the father. Malala's best friend was Shazia Ramzan and her doctor was Dr Fiona Reynold.

I would recommend this book to 13+ this is really a book for 12 younger  book it has a lot a difficult words and big words.

I would rate this book 4/5.

Do-now thursday

English is the most important subject in school.

English can be the most important subject, because it teaches us a lot about people, the past and the present. like we have learnt about people who have done good thing and leaders like Mother Teresa , Jacinda Ardern, kate Sheppard and so on. I do think English is one on the important subjects in school.

Science-Distillation

States of matter

S. solid
L. liquid
G. gas

Whats evaporation? Evaporation is when a substance gets heated up and it turn from a liquid to gas. (Think of a kettle boiling)

Whats condensation: Its goes from gas to a liquid by cooling it down. (Thing of your window when its cold)

whats distillation: Separate a solution using evaporating.

Distillation Experiment:
Aim: use distillation to separate out the dissolved sugars in coke or coke zero (diet), from the liquid.

Hypothesis:
I think that coke will give us more sugar then the coke zero will. Coke is just made out of sugar more then coke zero is. I think the liquid will look lighter then it started as.

Results: it boiled to a point wear there was only sugar left some had a whole lot of sugar (normal coke) and some had not much (diet coke) and one had less water and one had more.

discussion:  I saw that it boiled because we were adding heat to a liquid and that turned into a gas because we gave it more energy (evaporating) then we called it down making less energy for it.

Conclusion:  Yes it did work

Chromatography

Chromatography is a pigment separate, pigments are different colors in one type of  color like a pen it take out the different colors it also gives the colors to things.

Aim-To separate the different pigments from ink using chromatography

hypothesis- I think that the pen line will go up and take out the pigments, the colors we might see are orange blue and black. (depended on the pen

1- Draw a line across the filter paper in pencil, 5cm from the bottom.

2- Draw a coloured dot in the centre of the line.

3- Measure out 10mL of water and place in the test tube.

4- Place the filter paper in the test tube and fold over the side. MAKE SURE THE PENCIL LINE/ DOT IS NOT IN THE WATER.

5- Wait for 5 minutes and observe the results

EQUIPMENT- Felt tip pen, filter paper strips, test tube, measuring cylinder, pencil.

PB4L

Hello everyone today in class we did a PB4L. So we got given a sheet of paper with the CARR values those are Commitment, Achievement,Resilience and Respect. On the sheet it have some expectations for all school settings, learning spaces, moving between spaces, outdoor spaces and digital/cybersmart. Then we had to pick one that we do from each one and one the we don't do from each one.

Commitment learning spaces- I'm always in the right place at the right time. When the bell rings I'm at class or when i'm in class i'm in the right space.

Achievement all school settings- I always do my personal best, I'm always try doing it to a high expectations and I meet my dead line most of the time.

Resilience digital/cybersmart- I listen and apply feedback I also report any problems online and i'll be willing to try new technologies problem solve.

Respect outdoor spaces- I can respect the equipment and make sure school property is taken care of.

2 things I don't do.

always have good manners and appropriate languages I don't always use these some time it get out of hand.

report any damages and dangers. I don't always do this

Do Now- Friday

Anyone in Aotearoa New Zealand can vote? not everyone is New Zealand should be able to vote for the federal election. Some people could be to young to vote and might not understand what its really for but then some people might understand it and can vote. Like you could be 7 and not understand but you could be 14 and understand all of it. I feel that it should be 16+ instead of 18+ but if we had younger kids voting and could help more.

Is Your name important and why? When you think about your name you might be thinking oh my name isn't that important but it is. Your name is used for a lot of thing like jobs, check up like at the doctors, school and for who you are. It doesn't have to be your bio name, you could have changed your name like from Heaven to Josh. Your name is very important to your identity and it makes your character or it might not. Sometimes it good to lie about your name but most of the time its not. Over all your name is very important you and who you are.

STEM-Fitting Through Paper

Today we started doing a STEAM challenged called fitting through paper. We had to find away to fit through A4 paper. My group tried cutting out the middle of it and that failed then we tried to just cut it in one big strip.  If the paper was bigger it would be so much easier and we could work better and if the paper was smaller well I give up I wouldn't be able to do anything with it. If the cuts were not as deep (long) it would be harder because they would make the cuts smaller and hard to work with. If the cuts were closer together it would be such a problem but still a bit hard. If the cuts your further apart it would be quite hard.

Malala- Summary and Vocabulary

Hello here is my finished Malala task. We had to wright a summary about each chapter we read and at the bottom is my vocabulary.

Ch 14.

When Malala didn’t go to school for a month she watched a show called ugly betty. The way Malala described her was that she had braces and a big heart, Betty could also walk around New York City freely unlike Malala. She also realized that Betty didn’t have all the rights. After a month the schools reopened but only girls ten and under were allowed to go to school, girls over ten had to stay home. Those rules didn’t stop Malala from going to school, Madam Maryam told the girls that they can come to school but not in uniform, only casual clothes. This was called secret school.

Ch 15.

One February morning Malala was woken by gunfire but it wasn’t unusual since she had woken up but several guns fired at night. This time was different. They were shooting into the sky for peace. The government agreed to sharia if the Taliban stop fighting, sharia is like peace.  Since 2007 more than thousands of people have been killed. Now since they have peace, girls were allowed to go back to school but they had to be covered in public clothes, so they could go to school. Malala was interviewed for girls rights then it ended up going world wide on GEO tv and a woman came to their home land and did a talk that made malala’s father look like he aged because of how bad the speech was. One day Malala saw her father and his friends watching a video on his phone and Malala saw that it was a girl being beaten and attacked but the talian she was hit 34 times, she was only a teenager.

Ch 16.

‘No Pashtun  leaves his land of his own sweet will. Either he leaves from poverty or he leaves your love’ Her grandmother taught her that. They were packing and getting ready to leave the house. They were leaving for their safety.

Ch 17.

After three months of living here and there with strangers and relatives  they were finally on their way home.

Vocabulry.

Siege-a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies.

Democracy- control of an organization or group by the majority of its members.

Nancy Wake- Essay

Hello everyone since week three my class has been writing essays on New Zealand leader I decide to pick Nancy Wake. I found her story very interesting so I wanted to write an essay about her, this is my essay.

Nancy wake was a women leader back in 1939-1945.  Nancy Wake was born in Wellington on 30th of August 1912. Her full name is Nancy Grace Augusta Wake. She is the youngest of six children Nancy followed after her father becoming a journalist who joined the french resistance and later special operations executive during World War II. Nancy was also a secret agent during world war 2 and fighting for New Zealand while helping people.

I feel that Nancy Wake is a very strong leader for her time because the Germans and the Gestapo unrestricted access to all parts of Vichy France and made life more dangerous for Nancy. When the network was betrayed that same year she decided to flee France. Nancy was only 16 years old when she ran away from home. Nancy knew that she was in danger so keep herself safe by fleeing France but she also did this out of bravery. Nancy knew she might be able to help that's why she became a nurse after running away.

After running away she became a nurse but she only worked briefly as a nurse. In 1932, Nancy inherited some money and used it to travel to London then into the mainland of Europe to train to become a journalist. Nancy ended up settling in Paris and working for the Hearst group of newspapers and as a journalist. This all happened after she ran away then she joined the war at about 23.

During the war  Nanay was a resistance fighter who led an army of 7000 Marquis troops in a guerrilla mission to sabotage the Nazi regime. She was given the code name ‘The White Mouse’.  She was credited for saving the lives of hundreds of allied soldiers. Downed airmen between 1940 and 1943 by escorting them through occupied France to safety in Spain.

After the war Nancy immediately was awarded the george medal, The United states medal of freedom, the Médaille de la Résistance, and thrice, the Croix de Guerre. She worked for the intelligence department at the british air ministry. In 1985, Nancy published her autobiography, The white mouse. She got married to her husband John Forward the couple had no children. Later on 19 august 1997 after 40 year of her marriage her husband died at Port Macquarie.

Do Now-Thursday

I feel that Principal's are the most important people in the school or at least one of the most important people in the school but I don't think that DP principal's are that important. Principals are important to us because they make decisions that teacher or students might not be able to make in the school and for the people. Principal's can make a decision like 'these two student need to stay away fr each other' or 'teacher can do this in class to help the student'. So I do feel that principal's are very important to our systems.

Shark Infested Custard

Hello everyone today we played and game called shark infested custard in health. I used my verbal commutation and being inclusive the warm fuzzies I used was "you can do this" I cheered on my team and we helped each other. it went well we didn't argue or anything we just communicated it would have been nice to have bigger hoops though they were pretty small. I worked with Faye, Kristille, Chelsea, Hamid, Travis and Sereybuth. I worked at level 4 of Hellison's model. I cared for my team mates, I was encouraging and I worked without a reward.

Game Day

Hello today in class we had a game day it was raining to we didn't play our game outside but today I used the Ip skills verbal commutations and active listening. I used them by communicating with my team mate and I was listening to what she said. I worked with Kristille and we played uno, ping pong, connect for shots and guess who. I really enjoyed playing I learnt how to play a new game. I would definitely do this again but change nothing about it. I worked at level 4 for my Hellion's models I picked this because I encourage my team mate and I had care for my team mate.

Concentration and Dilution

Hello today in science we are doing concentration and dilution. concentration, a measure of how much solute has been dissolved into the solvent.  Like "the juice was strongly concentrated" so that would mean "the juice was weakly dilute".

Aim: Carry out a serial dilution with potassium permanganate,

We can measure in two ways:

- How dilute is something... (how weak it is)

- How concentrated something is... (how strong it is)

The experiment we are doing is dilution. (serial dilutions)

what is it?

making something less concentrated, there will be less particles in the liquid. serial in a scientific way means multiple. We are using test tubs the first test tub has 10ml of water then the rest have 5ml of water. We are also using potassium permanganate witch is toxic and flammable.

I think that some of them will turn purple and some wont because the potassium permanganate has a purple tint to it.

We are always gonna move is over from one test tub we are going to use a pipette to move 5ml's from each test tub.

results: At the beginning the water was a dark purple then we keep moving them along they become a lighter purple and more see through. I think it become like this become the water washed out a lot of the colour made it more dilute.

science-Filtering

Hello today in science we are doing filtering and a little experiment to do with filtering. filtering- is separating different size particles out of a mixture  based on there size. Can all mixtures filtered? no only insoluble particles... If it has dissolved into the liquid it has to be separated a different way.

experiment:
make a mixture then separate it...

chemical liquids:

copper sulfate- light blue, liquid, transparent.

sodium carbonate- colourless, liquid, translucent.

what I think will happen...
I think it might separate is you can make the filter right it will most likely all separate but if you don't have it right i might not separate probably. With the liquids I think they will combined and the light-ish blue with the clear, it might become a lighter blue.

1. Pour approximately 50mL of copper sulfate solution into a beaker.

2. Add the same volume of sodium carbonate solution. A reaction will happen, you should see a cloudy blue precipitate form. Called copper carbonate.

3. Watch demo then fold filter paper to fit inside the funnel

4. Place the funnel with the filter paper inside of it, into the mouth of a conical flask.

5. Stir the mixture in the beaker, then carefully pour it into the funnel.

6. Observe what happened.

what happened: It become dark blue and cloudy (Opaque) i don't know why it happened. When we separated it become copper carbonate we the come together it becoming a small solid (blue sludge-precipitate) then when we filter it become clear because of sodium sulfate.

Equipment:

Sodium carbonate

Copper sulfate

Conical flask

Stirring Rod

200mL Beaker

Funnel

Filter paper
